A Florida woman was fatally shot by her boyfriend just hours after police told her to stop calling 911 following a domestic dispute, newly released dashcam footage shows. Latina Herring, 35, was killed along with her eight-year-old son, while her father and seven-year-old son were injured in the attack on Monday morning in Sanford, Florida.
The footage, obtained by WESH, captures Herring arguing with her boyfriend, Allen Cashe, 31, outside a Wawa convenience store around 3:20am. Police determined the incident was a 'civil' disturbance and accused Herring of making false reports. An officer is heard telling her: 'We're going to handle it ma'am, just stop calling 911 and making accusations that you don't know about, alright?'
Officers allowed Cashe to leave the scene, deeming the situation stable. However, around 6:30am, Cashe returned to Herring's home with an AK-47 and opened fire, killing Herring and her son, and wounding her father and other son. Two innocent bystanders were also shot but are in stable condition.
Police had been called back to Herring's home later that evening after the couple resumed arguing. Herring gave an officer a bag of Cashe's belongings, which reportedly included a gun. It is unclear if the officer knew the weapon was inside. A 911 caller later reported that Cashe had a gun, but the officer was still at the residence at the time.
Sanford police spokeswoman Bianca Gillett described the scene as 'one of the worst that our officers and investigators have ever responded to.' Friends of Herring expressed disappointment with the police response. 'Sanford PD's a big disappointment to me and to others,' said Ladasha Beasley, a friend. 'To protect and serve who man? Who? Justice needs to be served.'
Cashe was arrested without incident at a nearby apartment complex. He faces multiple charges, including murder. The case has raised questions about police handling of domestic violence calls.
