UK Government Updates Travel Advice for Jordan Amid Ongoing Middle East Strikes
The UK government has revised its travel guidance for Jordan, now advising against all but essential travel for the entire country, except for areas within 3km of the Syrian border, where all travel is strongly discouraged. This update comes as regional tensions escalate, with Iran publicly stating its intention to target locations linked to the United States and Israel.
Security Risks and Travel Disruptions Highlighted
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) warns that regional escalation poses significant security risks and has led to widespread travel disruption. The FCDO notes that Iran continues to strike civilian infrastructure across the region, including ports, hotels, roads, bridges, energy facilities, and airports. Missiles travelling through Jordanian airspace have been intercepted, with debris falling in some urban areas, prompting advice for Britons to be cautious of falling missile debris.
Tourists are advised to avoid areas around security or military facilities and locations associated with the US or Israel. The FCDO recommends following local advice, such as staying indoors or finding designated shelters if sirens are sounded.
Impact on Travel and Flights
Jordanian airspace has been affected by the conflict, with authorities potentially announcing closures at short notice. While flights are still departing from Amman Queen Alia airport, many are subject to cancellations and delays. Travellers should check with their airlines before heading to the airport. Under UK law, if a flight is cancelled, airlines must provide care and assistance, including food, drink, accommodation, and transport, regardless of the delay's cause.
For British nationals trying to leave Jordan via Saudi Arabia with emergency travel documents or passports with less than six months validity, helplines for the British Embassy in Riyadh and British Consulate in Jeddah are available for advice.
Cancellation and Insurance Considerations
If you decide to cancel a flight, holiday, tour, or excursion to Jordan, contact your travel provider. Since the FCDO advises against all but essential travel—which includes urgent family or business commitments—you may be eligible to cancel a package holiday without penalty for a full refund under the Package Travel and Linked Travel Arrangements Regulations 2018. However, travel insurance could be invalidated if you travel against FCDO advice.
Holidaymakers with trips booked to the region are urged to follow FCDO guidance, sign up for travel advice email alerts, monitor local and international media, and adhere to instructions from local authorities to ensure safety during this volatile period.
