Anonymous Letter Revives Investigation into Devastating 2012 Essex Fire
In a significant development, Essex Police have received an anonymous letter that could provide fresh leads in the investigation of a tragic fire that claimed the lives of six family members nearly 14 years ago. The blaze, which occurred in Harlow, Essex, on 15 October 2012, resulted in the deaths of Dr Sabah Usmani, 44, and her five young children, while her husband, Dr Abdul Shakoor, was the sole survivor.
Details of the Tragic Incident
The fire broke out in the early hours at the family's terraced home on Barn Mead. Dr Usmani and her children—Muneeb (9), Rayyan (6), Hira (12), Sohaib (11), and Maheen (3)—were asleep when the flames engulfed the downstairs area. A silver Ford Focus car parked nearby was also set alight simultaneously. Despite desperate efforts by Dr Shakoor, who worked at Princess Alexandra Hospital, to raise the alarm and save his family, the home was quickly consumed by fire and smoke.
Sohaib and Maheen were rushed to hospital but succumbed to their injuries, with Maheen passing away three days later. An inquest in 2014 revealed that Dr Usmani had wrapped herself around her youngest daughter in a futile attempt to shield her from the flames. The coroner, Caroline Beasley Murray, returned an open conclusion, citing insufficient evidence to determine whether the deaths were accidental or the result of unlawful killing.
Operation Shakespeare: A Persistent Murder Probe
Essex Police have been treating the incident as murder under Operation Shakespeare, an investigation that has spanned almost 14 years. The force has dedicated extensive resources to the case, with over 70 officers and staff involved, nearly 2,000 items examined, and around 500 witness statements collected. However, no one has been held accountable to date.
The anonymous letter, received recently, outlines specific details that police are eager to pursue. Detective Chief Inspector Louise Metcalfe, leading the operation, emphasized the letter's importance, stating that the author appears to share the investigation's goal of securing justice for Dr Shakoor. She appealed directly to the writer, assuring them of fair treatment and highlighting that their information could be pivotal in holding those responsible accountable.

Police have urged the letter's author to come forward and speak directly with investigators to advance the probe. Additionally, they are calling on anyone with information about the fire to share it via the major incident public portal online.
