Joe Biden has undergone surgery to remove skin cancer lesions, his spokesperson confirmed on Thursday. The announcement came after video footage emerged showing the former president leaving a church in Delaware with a fresh scar on his forehead.
Spokesperson Kelly Scully confirmed that Biden received Mohs surgery, a precise technique that removes skin layer by layer until no cancer remains. The procedure addresses a health challenge for Biden, who has faced multiple cancer diagnoses in recent years.
In 2023, while still in office, Biden had a basal cell carcinoma lesion removed from his chest. Basal cell carcinoma is a common and typically non-aggressive form of skin cancer. More recently, in March 2024, his office announced he had been diagnosed with an aggressive prostate cancer that had spread to his bones.
Biden has been open about his family's struggles with cancer. His son Beau died of a brain tumour, and his wife, Jill, has had two cancerous lesions removed. In a social media post following his prostate cancer diagnosis, Biden wrote, 'Cancer touches us all. Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places.'
