Coronation Street star Beverley Callard has shared a positive update in her cancer battle, revealing she does not need a second operation and is hopeful of being declared cancer-free within weeks. The 68-year-old actress, who played Liz McDonald on the ITV soap for 30 years, was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer last month and recently underwent surgery.
In a video update to fans, Callard said her consultant confirmed the swelling under her arm is softening and turning into fluid, meaning no further surgery is required. She will find out in about four weeks whether all the cancer was removed and if it had spread to her lymph nodes. If cancer-free, she will begin radiotherapy shortly after.
The actress, who also starred in Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, celebrated the news by getting Botox and a hair appointment. She said she is eager to return to work on Irish soap Fair City, where she was filming when she received her diagnosis. Callard is due back on set in Dublin later this week.
Callard urged other women going through similar experiences to stay strong, calling them 'warriors'. She also admitted feeling nervous about walking a red carpet for the first time since her diagnosis, as she feels 'lopsided' and has had to alter a dress to disguise her condition.
