Magnesium gummies, a popular dietary supplement favoured for their convenience and taste, could soon be available only with a prescription. Health officials are considering stricter regulations following concerns over potential misuse and adverse effects.
The move comes as experts warn that overconsumption of magnesium, often marketed as a remedy for stress and sleep issues, may lead to serious health complications. Symptoms of excessive intake include nausea, irregular heartbeat, and even kidney problems.
Why the Crackdown?
Nutritionists have raised alarms about the growing trend of self-diagnosing deficiencies and over-relying on supplements. "Many people assume that because it’s a gummy, it’s harmless," says Dr. Emily Carter, a leading dietitian. "But magnesium is a powerful mineral that needs careful dosing."
The UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is reviewing whether to reclassify high-dose magnesium gummies as prescription-only. If approved, they would join other tightly controlled supplements like iron tablets.
Consumer Reactions
The potential ban has divided opinions. Some users argue that gummies help them manage stress and muscle cramps effectively, while others support tighter controls. "I’d rather have safe access than risk side effects," says London-based fitness coach Mark Davies.
For now, the debate continues, with health professionals urging the public to consult doctors before taking high-dose supplements.
