Angie Best, the first wife of late football legend George Best, has been diagnosed with colon cancer that has spread to her liver, her son Calum Best has announced. The 73-year-old received the diagnosis a few weeks ago, according to a video shared by Calum on Instagram on Thursday 8 January.
In an emotional post, Calum, a TV personality, appealed for financial support via a GoFundMe page to cover specialist treatment and care. He said he could not afford the costs alone and asked for contributions, no matter how small. “This has been an emotional rollercoaster I never expected to be on,” he added.
Angie also shared a message through her son’s Instagram, vowing to fight the disease. She outlined plans to explore immune therapy, targeted chemotherapy, interventional radiology and hepatic artery infusion, stating: “I’m ready to fight… these funds will cover all of the above and include living expenses, home care and travel.”
Angie met George Best in Los Angeles in 1975 while he was playing for the Los Angeles Aztecs. They married a year later and had son Calum in 1981, but separated in 1982 and finalised their divorce in 1986.
