Natalie Imbruglia has opened up about the emotional and physical challenges of her IVF journey, which led to the birth of her son Max in 2019 when she was 44. The former Neighbours star, now 51, spoke candidly on the How To Fail podcast about the 'brutal' process and the trauma she experienced.
A Difficult Path to Motherhood
Imbruglia, best known for her hit song 'Torn' and her role as Beth Brennan on the Australian soap, chose to use a sperm donor to become a single mother. She described the IVF process as 'pretty brutal' and advised other women considering the procedure to do thorough research beforehand.
'There's a lot that I didn't know or understand about that process and there's a lot of trauma involved along the process of learning things that someone could have told me,' she told Elizabeth Day. She emphasized the importance of education and sharing experiences among women.
Loneliness and Misconceptions
The singer admitted feeling 'pretty lonely' during her IVF journey, especially when the procedure didn't work, leaving her to 'pull herself together' over time. She also addressed hurtful claims that she used a sperm donor because she didn't want a partner. 'It really upset me... because that was not the case,' she said, explaining that her biological clock prompted the decision.
Imbruglia, who has been in high-profile relationships with Lenny Kravitz and David Schwimmer, and was married to Daniel Johns, has never revealed the identity of the sperm donor. However, she has expressed immense joy in motherhood, calling it 'the most incredible thing that's ever happened to me.'
A Dream Fulfilled
Two years after Max's birth, Imbruglia told Stellar magazine that becoming a parent was a dream she had since childhood. 'It's given me a sense of peace,' she said. She also reflected on her life before motherhood, telling Baby magazine that despite having friends, a marriage, a home, and a career, 'something was missing' and she yearned for a child above all else.
