Dozens of activists from the direct action group Palestine Action were arrested in central London on Thursday following a dramatic occupation of the UK headquarters of Israeli defence contractor Elbit Systems.
The protestors targeted the firm's office on Portman Square, Marylebone, which they allege manufactures key components for drones used by the Israeli military in Gaza. The group stormed the building, barricading themselves inside and unveiling large banners that read 'Shut Elbit Down' and 'UK Complicit in Genocide' from the windows, drawing significant police presence and public attention.
Chaos and Confrontation in Marylebone
Eyewitnesses described a scene of chaos as Metropolitan Police officers, including many from the Territorial Support Group, worked to extract the demonstrators from the premises. Video footage from the scene shows activists using ladders to access the building before chaining doors shut from the inside.
Once inside, the group reportedly caused significant disruption, with sounds of breaking glass and alarms heard from the street. The protest halted business operations at the site for several hours.
A Statement from the Activists
In a statement released on social media, Palestine Action declared the action a success, stating, "We have shut down a hub for genocide. Elbit Systems is a stain on our city and our country. While our government continues to arm and support Israel's atrocities in Gaza, the people will take direct action to disrupt the trade in death."
The group has repeatedly targeted Elbit's eight UK sites over the past few years, but this direct occupation of its London HQ marks a significant escalation in their tactics.
Police Response and Aftermath
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that a total of 28 arrests were made on suspicion of offences including aggravated trespass, criminal damage, and burglary. All individuals were taken into custody at various central London police stations.
A police spokesman said: "Officers attended and worked to bring the situation to a safe and swift conclusion. A number of arrests have been made and enquiries continue."
Elbit Systems, Israel's largest arms manufacturer, has faced intense scrutiny and continuous protest action since the onset of the war in Gaza. The company has consistently stated that it operates lawfully within the UK.
