Israeli forces have intercepted the activist ship Handala as it attempted to deliver much-needed humanitarian aid to Gaza, reigniting tensions in the besieged coastal enclave.
The vessel, operated by pro-Palestinian activists, was reportedly seized by Israeli naval troops in international waters before it could reach its destination. The Israeli military confirmed the operation, stating the ship was diverted to Ashdod port for inspection.
Humanitarian Mission Disrupted
Activists aboard the Handala claimed they were carrying medical supplies and food destined for Gaza's civilian population, which has faced severe shortages due to the ongoing blockade. "This was a peaceful mission to help starving families," said one organiser.
Israeli Justification
Israeli officials defended the interception, citing security protocols. "All maritime traffic to Gaza must undergo security checks to prevent weapons smuggling," a military spokesperson stated. The activists are reportedly being questioned by authorities.
The incident comes amid heightened regional tensions and growing international concern about deteriorating humanitarian conditions in Gaza. Humanitarian organisations have repeatedly warned of catastrophic food insecurity affecting the territory's 2.3 million residents.
