Shopping with the assistance of artificial intelligence is now generating more sales in the United Kingdom than traditional online search methods, according to recent data from software and analytics firm Adobe.
AI Conversion Rates Surge
Figures for May 2026 reveal that the UK AI shopping conversion rate has increased by 182% year-on-year and an astonishing 543% since January 2025. This metric measures the percentage of online visitors who interact with AI-powered tools, such as conversational chatbots, and subsequently complete a purchase.
Adobe noted that shoppers who clicked through to UK retail sites from AI sources were more likely to finalise a transaction compared to those arriving via conventional search engines. Instead of typing keywords and scrolling through results, consumers now ask AI a question and receive a single answer, often accompanied by a direct purchase link.
Traffic Growth and Consumer Trust
Adobe has been tracking AI referrals to retail sites since August 2024. In the first quarter of 2026, AI-driven traffic surged by 393% compared to the same period in 2025. Separate polling for Adobe found that 37% of UK consumers have already used an AI assistant for online shopping, primarily for research (43%) and product recommendations (40%).
Trust in AI is high, with 65% of users confident that AI provides accurate results, and 70% stating that AI assistants have become their primary source of product research.
Industry Insights
Vivek Pandya, director of Adobe Digital Insights, commented: "As shoppers have learned to trust AI tools, they feel more assured about their purchases and return fewer items. AI traffic is increasingly consistent in converting better than traditional channels, and adoption continues to accelerate. For retailers, the clear message is to make sure your digital properties are AI-ready. This isn’t a ‘nice to have’ any more – it’s key to remain relevant and to convert more sales within this new retail landscape."
