Keeping white clothes bright can be a challenge, as they often lose their lustre due to detergent residue, body oils, or colour transfers from other garments. However, a simple kitchen staple available from Aldi for just 65p could be the answer.
Baking soda, also known as bicarbonate of soda, can help maintain the whiteness of clothing. According to online laundry and dry cleaning platform Hello Laundry, adding it to your wash can keep whites "looking crisp and clean".
Unlike harsh bleach or aggressive chemicals, baking soda acts as a gentle abrasive, helping to remove yellowing and dinginess from white fabrics. Simply add half a cup of baking soda alongside your regular detergent to enhance brightness without the need for strong bleach.
The kitchen staple can also be used for stain removal. For unsightly marks such as coffee spills or ink stains, make a paste by mixing baking soda with water and applying it to the stain before washing. For heavily stained items, dissolve a quarter cup of baking soda in a basin of warm water and soak the clothing for one to two hours prior to washing.
This inexpensive method offers a mild yet effective way to keep white clothes looking their best, without resorting to harsh chemicals.
