Ruth Evans, chair of Stop Scams UK, has transformed her north London Victorian terrace into a vibrant showcase for her extensive art collection. Now on her third renovation of the home she has lived in for 30 years, Evans worked with interior designer Mika Burdett to create a space that bursts with colour and personality.
“Each renewal of the house marks a stage in my life,” Evans explains. “First it was a comfortable home to raise a child; then, in my 40s, it was about bringing my own sense of style; and now it’s the rest of my days: a culmination of everything I’ve learned – the aesthetics, colour and art that make the house sing.”
The latest refurbishment involved structural changes to improve flow and storage, including a new window in the kitchen and removal of a wall and chimney breast. Burdett focused on spatial planning, while an architect handled essential structural work. Evans’s brief included a pet flap, low-level TV, display cases, and a pantry, all of which were accommodated.
Evans has always loved colour, but Burdett encouraged an even bolder palette. “I don’t think using colour takes courage, but it does take time to learn how colour can bring joy,” says Evans. “People say: how can you sleep in a marigold bedroom? Whereas I say: how can you sleep in a white bedroom?”
The art collection spans decades and includes works by Julian Opie, Howard Hodgkin, Joan Miró, Andy Warhol, and Maggi Hambling. Evans advises beginners to start with prints and collect affordably. “Having got my fingers burned early on, I delved into ways of collecting affordably. I love travelling and have brought back so many beautiful things – jugs, vessels, bowls and plates.”
Evans believes in spending money on beauty to create a harmonious home. “When your head is full of work stuff, day in day out, you need your home to be a place of harmony.”
