Joao Fonseca, the 19-year-old Brazilian tennis sensation, produced a stunning comeback to defeat Novak Djokovic in the third round of the French Open, guaranteeing that a new grand slam champion will be crowned in Paris. The match, which lasted over four hours, saw Fonseca rally from two sets down to win 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5.
A Historic Victory
Fonseca's victory is only the second time Djokovic has lost a match from a two-set lead, with the first occurring 16 years ago at the same tournament against Jurgen Melzer. The Serbian, who was seeking his 25th grand slam title, struggled with the humid conditions and appeared to be affected by a wrist issue as the match progressed.
"I actually didn't believe I could win," Fonseca admitted after the match. "I just played, I just enjoyed being on court, and what a match it was. What an idol we have and it was a pleasure just stepping on court against him."
Fonseca's Rise
The young Brazilian, who had previously fought back from two sets down in the previous round against Dino Prizmic, showed remarkable composure. After dropping the first two sets, Fonseca broke early in the third and maintained his aggressive style, saving two break points at 4-4 in the fourth set before taking the lead for the first time.
Djokovic, visibly exhausted, vomited at the side of the court after the first game of the deciding set. Despite his struggles, the 39-year-old champion fought valiantly, but Fonseca sealed the victory with three consecutive aces.
Other Matches
Meanwhile, Rafael Jodar, another teenage sensation, continued his impressive run by defeating Alex Michelsen 7-6 (2), 6-7 (5), 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Jodar, who arrived in Paris as the 27th seed, has become a fan favourite, with Spanish supporters chanting "Vamos Rafa" in his honour.
Jakub Mensik, who had struggled with heat exhaustion in his previous match, recovered from a first-set bagel to beat Alex De Minaur 0-6, 6-2, 6-2, 6-3, eliminating another top-10 seed.
