Five in Court Over Ely Riots: Key Sentencing Hearing Moments

Five people appeared in the dock over their part in the Ely riots on the fourth day of a sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court. Thirty individuals are being sentenced over two weeks. Here are the key moments from day four of the hearing.

Day Four of Sentencing Hearing

During the proceedings, Jumana Fouad, Ryan Knight, Jaydan Baston, Liam Williams, and Jamie Bateman faced the court as prosecutors detailed their roles in the riots.

Ryan Knight's Apology

Ryan Knight apologized through his barrister for a previous outburst in court, during which he shouted: "What about Harvey and Kyrees? I haven't heard their names once."

Prosecutor Matthew Cobbe described Knight as one of the most "prominent, aggressive and prolific" rioters. He covered his face, threw bottles and stones at police, used an aerosol can as a flamethrower, and kicked a lit bucket at officers. Knight missed a court date and was later found hiding under a friend's bed in Ely.

Jaydan Baston's Actions

Jaydan Baston mocked a police officer by asking, "Are you going to use that baton?" before throwing a missile at him. He later helped establish a football team in memory of Kyrees Sullivan and Harvey Evans.

Liam Williams' Involvement

Liam Williams attended the riot in his works van, handing out aerosol cans and fuel to rioters. These items were later used as flamethrowers to accelerate fires on vehicles and other property.
