Arsenal have received a clear update on Riccardo Calafiori's future after Real Madrid completed the signing of Marc Cucurella from Chelsea. The Spanish giants had been linked with a move for the Italian defender, but that possibility now appears to be off the table.
Real Madrid's Defensive Overhaul
Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho had identified Calafiori as a key target in his defensive rebuild. The La Liga club had already secured deals for Denzel Dumfries and Ibrahima Konate, and Calafiori was seen as the potential new left-back. However, with Cucurella's arrival, the need for Calafiori has diminished.
Arsenal's Stance on Calafiori
Arsenal have consistently maintained that they have no intention of selling Calafiori. The 24-year-old still has three years remaining on his contract, and the club is under no pressure to offload him. The Gunners value his contributions, despite his injury struggles.
Calafiori has missed 44 matchday squads through injury since joining Arsenal in 2024, spanning nine separate spells. His persistent fitness issues have been a source of frustration for manager Mikel Arteta and fans alike. Most recently, he picked up a problem after the final day of the season against Crystal Palace, ruling him out of the UEFA Champions League final.
Cucurella's Move to Real Madrid
Chelsea and Real Madrid agreed on a transfer fee of up to £51.7 million for Cucurella. The deal includes an initial £47.4 million with £4.3 million in add-ons. The defender had signed a new contract with Chelsea last summer but was receptive to the opportunity to join Real Madrid. He will relocate to Spain after the World Cup.
While Arsenal are relieved that they will not lose Calafiori, his availability remains a concern. A substantial offer could still tempt the club to sell, given his injury record. For now, the Gunners can focus on retaining their defensive depth.
