BMW driver jailed for 13 years over fatal Boxing Day crash

A driver who killed a mother and daughter in a 84mph Boxing Day crash has been jailed for 13 years and three months. Mohammed Ibrahim, 25, was racing another car through traffic lights in a 30mph zone when he crashed into a quad bike and then an MG car carrying four generations of the same family in Birmingham.

Amanda Riley, 49, and Linda Philips, 72, died at the scene in the Shard End area. Four other family members suffered injuries including a fractured sternum, a broken leg and bruising to the lungs. Ibrahim fled the scene after the crash, saying 'I need to go', the court heard.

Judge Paul Farrer KC said Ibrahim's speed and driving were 'grossly irresponsible' and showed disregard for the risks to others. He noted that passer-by Stuart Bates helped passengers escape the burning MG and 'may well have saved three lives'. The judge ordered £300 from public funds for Bates.

Ibrahim, of Old College Road, Sheldon, pleaded guilty to two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and three counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He was also banned from driving for 18 years and nine months.

The court heard the quad bike had run a red light, which the judge accepted as 'significant mitigation'. The driver of the other BMW involved has never been traced.
