Police Scotland Praise Fan Conduct Despite Isolated Incidents

Police Scotland have praised the conduct of football fans across the country during World Cup watch parties, despite a handful of isolated incidents. The Tartan Army celebrated into the early hours of Sunday, June 14, after John McGinn's goal secured a 1-0 victory for Steve Clarke's side against Haiti in Boston.

Good Spirits Overall

Assistant Chief Constable Stuart Houston stated that fans were in "good spirits" and behaved in a "responsible manner" for the most part. He said: "I want to recognise the conduct of football fans across the country following Scotland's opening World Cup match. Fan zones across the country welcomed supporters, with many establishments receiving extended licences. Police Scotland liaised with organisers in advance to help deliver a safe and secure environment for all to enjoy the occasion."

Isolated Incidents

However, there were some exceptions. In Inverness, a 30-year-old man was arrested and reported after a disturbance during which a police officer was assaulted. The officer did not require medical treatment, and the man is due to appear at Inverness Sheriff Court at a later date.

Houston added: "We will continue to support our partner agencies and local businesses throughout the tournament, at what is an exciting time for Scottish football fans."
