Ukrainian Police End Deadly Hostage Siege in Kyiv Supermarket

Ukrainian police have shot and killed a gunman responsible for a violent rampage in Kyiv that left at least six people dead. The assailant initially murdered bystanders on the streets before taking hostages and barricading himself inside a local supermarket on Saturday. According to Ukrainian officials, the incident culminated in a dramatic police operation to neutralise the threat.

Failed Negotiations Lead to Police Assault

Ihor Klymenko, head of Ukraine’s Interior Ministry, confirmed that special tactical police units stormed the supermarket after attempts to establish contact with the gunman through a negotiator proved unsuccessful. In a statement released on social media, Klymenko detailed that the attacker was killed while actively resisting arrest. The police negotiators had engaged with the gunman for approximately forty minutes prior to the decisive intervention.

Klymenko, who addressed reporters at the scene while wearing body armour, described a poignant moment during the standoff. A female police negotiator, equipped with body armour and positioned behind an armoured vehicle, used a loudspeaker to appeal directly to the assailant. She urged him, “the people are not to blame for this. Please, let them go and we will talk with you.” Despite these efforts, the gunman remained unresponsive.

Chronology of the Attack and Victims

The violence began when the gunman, armed with a legally registered carbine-style assault rifle, shot and killed four bystanders on the street. He then entered a supermarket in Kyiv's Holosiivskyi district, where he murdered a fifth individual. Mayor Vitali Klitschko later announced that a sixth victim, a young woman, succumbed to her injuries in hospital. An Associated Press reporter present at the scene witnessed the bodies of the victims covered by emergency blankets before they were removed.

Klymenko provided further context regarding the weapon used: the assailant had approached licensing authorities in December to have the firearm test-fired as his permit was nearing expiration. He submitted a medical certificate and an application to renew the permit. Klymenko emphasised that the ongoing investigation will scrutinise which medical institution issued the certificate.

Police Response and Aftermath

Televised footage from the scene captured police officers taking cover within the shopping mall housing the supermarket as shots were fired. Bystanders were swiftly escorted away from the area to ensure their safety. Klymenko explained the rationale behind the police action, stating, “We tried to persuade him, knowing that there was likely a wounded person inside. We even offered to bring in tourniquets to stop the bleeding, but he did not respond. Consequently, the order was given to neutralise him.”

The gunman, born in 1968, has not been publicly identified beyond this detail. The swift and coordinated response by Ukrainian authorities highlights the challenges faced in managing such high-stakes crisis situations. The incident has undoubtedly shaken the local community, with officials now focusing on the investigation to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the attack.
