Chloe Madeley has spoken out following the horrifying stabbings of two men in Golders Green, the area she has called home for 29 years. The daughter of presenter Richard Madeley described the events as a 'very scary sequence of events' in an emotional social media post.
Details of the Attack
Two people were stabbed just after 11am on Wednesday, April 29, in Golders Green. The victims, identified locally as Moshe Shine, 76, and Shloime Rand, 34, suffered serious stab wounds. One was stabbed in the chest while leaving a synagogue. These incidents follow a series of arson attacks targeting the Jewish community in London.
Chloe Madeley's Response
In an Instagram post, Madeley wrote: 'As a Golders Green resident for the last 29 years of my life, I can say that the multiple, recent events of vandalism, arson, verbal abuse and violent attacks have been deeply upsetting and scary to witness. So I can only imagine how the Jewish community, my neighbours and friends, must be feeling during these times.'
She urged the public not to project blame onto innocent people, regardless of personal beliefs. 'It's incredibly important, now more than ever, that regardless of your own personal religious or political beliefs, you do not project blame or hate onto innocent people who, like all of us, are merely going about their day trying to live their lives, take care of their families and put food on the table.'
Madeley also praised the Shomrim and the Metropolitan Police for their presence in the community, stating, 'Humanity and compassion are needed now more than ever.'
Investigation and Aftermath
A 45-year-old British national born in Somalia was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. He was discharged from hospital and remains in police custody. The suspect also attempted to stab police officers and was Tasered before being apprehended.
Victim Shloime Rand spoke from hospital, saying, 'People are really concerned, people are afraid, people are uncomfortable walking in the street... it's for the past few months really that our community is suffering from these type of attacks.' He added, 'Thanks to God that I am recovering, and the wound isn't so bad as they initially thought. It's really a miracle that has happened to me today.'
Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the attack, stating, 'The antisemitic attack in Golders Green is utterly appalling. Attacks on our Jewish community are attacks on Britain.'
