At least 15 people were injured on Saturday when a car ploughed into pedestrians at a parade in New Iberia, Louisiana, celebrating the Lao New Year. Authorities said some injuries are believed to be serious.
Louisiana state police charged a man with driving while impaired, careless operation, and 18 counts of first-degree negligent injuring. He is also accused of having an open container of alcohol in the vehicle.
Acadian Ambulance reported transporting 13 people to hospital, with two airlifted. Social media videos showed a chaotic scene with several people on the ground near a blue vehicle.
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry said on X that he and his wife were praying for all those affected and expressed gratitude for first responders. Organisers of the Louisiana Lao New Year festival cancelled Saturday night's music concerts and alcohol sales, stating they were profoundly saddened and praying for victims and their families.
The three-day festival, held every Easter weekend, includes live music, parades, and other activities celebrating the Lao New Year.
