The final season of "Stranger Things" has arrived, and with it come ominous hints about the fates of two key characters. In Volume 2, released on Netflix, a conversation between Eleven and her sister Kali suggests that their deaths may be the only way to break a cycle of government exploitation.
Kali, who was rescued from a military lab, reveals that her blood was being used to create more individuals with powers, similar to the program that produced Eleven and Vecna. She argues that as long as they exist, the government will continue to hunt them, and the only solution is for both sisters to die when the Upside Down is destroyed.
"Don't you see, Jane? It's a cycle. A terrible, vicious cycle," Kali tells Eleven. "But we can stop it tonight. After we kill [Henry], after the children are rescued, we don't leave with the others. We stay on the bridge. When the Upside Down vanishes, so will we."
The conversation is interrupted, leaving their fates uncertain. Series co-creators the Duffer Brothers have previously stated they avoid killing characters gratuitously, but the narrative has not yet presented an alternative to Kali's grim proposal.
With the series finale set for New Year's Eve, fans are left wondering whether Eleven and Kali will sacrifice themselves or find another way to end the threat once and for all.
