A British expat has lost both of his legs following an alleged hit and run in Thailand. Willie Braid, 54, from Scotland, was riding a motorbike in Bangkok on July 27 when he was involved in a crash with a lorry, which is said to have fled the scene.
Braid was rushed to hospital with life-changing injuries. He suffered kidney failure and was placed in an induced coma. Both of his legs had to be amputated below the knee, and he remains in hospital requiring round-the-clock care.
His sister June flew out to Thailand after being informed of the crash. She said Willie has come out of the coma but is confused and does not comprehend his injuries. She told the Daily Record: 'He's come out of the coma but he doesn't know where he is or what's happened. He recognises us, but he's very confused.'
Willie, who has lived in Thailand for five years, is receiving kidney dialysis and is expected to remain in hospital for at least three months. Once discharged, he will require lifetime support and will need to move into supported accommodation.
June has launched a fundraiser to help pay for his rehabilitation and medical bills. Nearly £5,000 has been raised so far. The family is also receiving support from the British Embassy in Thailand to trace the driver and bring them to justice.
