I have been doing my grocery shopping at Aldi and Sainsbury's, but one M&S item always draws me back – and it is worth every penny.
A Shift in Shopping Habits
It was only a few years ago that I decided to overhaul my grocery shopping habits in a bid to cut down my monthly food bill. Rather than heading straight to Sainsbury's, I would make my first stop at the local Aldi to pick up all the staples on my list. If Aldi did not stock everything I needed, I would then make my way to Sainsbury's to pick up whatever was left. Yes, it might sound like extra effort, but it has made a real dent in my weekly and monthly shopping costs.
Comparing prices between Aldi and Sainsbury's never fails to astound me, particularly as I watch the price tags slowly and quietly creep upwards over time. Milk, bread, eggs — you name it, the prices make me wince. Bagging something for under £1 feels like a proper victory.
The M&S Temptation
When it comes to doing the food shop, I would like to think of myself as pretty savvy with money. That is why you will never catch me doing my weekly shop at Waitrose or M&S, despite both being within walking distance of my front door. Yet I will hold my hands up and admit I have one weakness that completely undermines my efforts to be financially responsible. I simply cannot help myself.
Every time I set foot in an M&S, I make a beeline for the sweets and chocolate aisle, on the hunt for one of the finest supermarket chocolate bars around. I am talking about the £7.50 chocolate bar known as The Big Daddy Bar. Under any other circumstances, I would flat-out refuse and baulk at the idea of handing over £7.50 for a chocolate bar — but when it comes to this one, I have absolutely no willpower.
What Makes the Big Daddy Bar Special
For those who have not yet encountered The Big Daddy, it is a generously sized milk chocolate bar combining smooth milk and rich dark chocolate, loaded with caramel, peanut butter and roasted peanuts — not entirely unlike a Snickers. It caused quite a stir and went viral when it first appeared on shelves, largely due to its jaw-dropping price tag.
I held out for as long as I could, until a visit to my parents' house revealed that my mum had gone ahead and bought one. It turned out to be the best thing she had ever done. From the very first bite, I was completely sold. This chocolate bar has become my ultimate weakness, and I will go out of my way to get my hands on one.
The chocolate is velvety but not overly sweet, complementing the caramel brilliantly, which thankfully does not cloy. The roasted peanuts bring a depth of flavour that cuts through the sweetness, making the whole experience feel like a match made in heaven.
An Indulgent Confession
I will come clean — I can polish off an entire bar in one sitting. Once I start, there is simply no stopping me. There is no logic to it whatsoever; all rational thinking disappears the moment I set foot in an M&S. It has become even more perilous since a brand new M&S Food Hall opened up nearby, making it far too tempting to wander in on a whim.
Call me daft, call me ridiculous, but if I have got £7.50 burning a hole in my pocket, I am getting the Big Daddy. I have accepted the price, and honestly, you should too.
