Jadon Sancho Officially Released: One of Man United's Worst Signings
Jadon Sancho Released: United's Costly Mistake

Manchester United have officially parted ways with Jadon Sancho, confirming his exit in the club's retained list submitted to the Premier League. The announcement, made on Wednesday, dedicated just 44 words to the winger, acknowledging his role in the 2023 Carabao Cup-winning squad and wishing him well for the future.

Despite no ill will, Sancho's time at Old Trafford will be remembered as a monumental failure. Signed for £73 million in 2021, he scored a mere 12 goals in 83 appearances, costing the club approximately £6 million per goal—not including his £250,000-per-week wages. The Ineos regime now aims to avoid such costly mistakes.

A Promising Start That Fizzled

Sancho arrived from Borussia Dortmund with immense potential, but it quickly became apparent he was ill-suited for the Premier League. Former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had described him as a creative, positive winger who could excite fans, but the player who emerged never matched that description. Sancho lacked the pace to take on defenders, and the intensity of English football proved too much.

An ear infection upon arrival hampered his start, yet he managed only three Premier League goals in his debut season. By the time he scored his first league goal, Solskjaer had been sacked and Michael Carrick was in caretaker charge.

Struggles Under Pressure

United tracked Sancho for four years before his transfer. Ralf Rangnick, who scouted him during his time with Red Bull, noted the weight of expectation at United. Rangnick observed that Sancho was a top performer in training but struggled to replicate that on the pitch, citing the physicality and pressure of the Premier League.

A brief resurgence in early 2022 saw Sancho score against Southampton, assist twice against Leeds, and net in consecutive matches against Manchester City and Tottenham. However, tonsillitis ended his campaign early, and the following season he missed two months due to physical and mental health issues, with Erik ten Hag granting him time away.

A Brief Return and Fallout

Upon his return, Sancho received a standing ovation at Old Trafford and chants of his name. He played a role in the Carabao Cup triumph, but his relationship with Ten Hag soured. In September 2023, Sancho was dropped for a match against Arsenal after Ten Hag cited insufficient training levels. Sancho publicly disputed this on social media, leading to his banishment from the first team until the January transfer window.

He subsequently rejoined Dortmund on loan, starting in the Champions League final, then spent seasons on loan at Chelsea and Aston Villa. Neither club made his move permanent. Sancho won the Conference League with Chelsea and the Europa League with Villa, but he played only 29 and nine minutes in those finals, respectively.

Sancho's potential to become a decisive player in big matches never materialized. Instead, he leaves as a cautionary tale of unfulfilled promise and a costly error for Manchester United.
