Hybrid Training: The Secret to Getting Fitter and Stronger
Hybrid Training: The Secret to Getting Fitter and Stronger

Hybrid training, also known as concurrent training, combines cardio and resistance exercises within the same programme. This approach has gained popularity through trends like Hyrox and CrossFit, which require both strength and endurance. According to Matt Lee, a postdoctoral research fellow at the Deakin Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition, hybrid training can be performed within a single session or across separate sessions during the week.

While the concept is not new, it was previously believed that endurance training could negatively impact strength development, a phenomenon known as the 'interference effect'. However, recent research has shown this is not the case. Phil Price, author of The Science of Hybrid Training, explains that the term 'hybrid athlete' was coined by Alex Viada in his 2015 book, referring to individuals who pursue separate goals in strength and endurance sports.

Hybrid training has evolved to appeal to anyone wanting to improve overall fitness. Thomas Jones, an associate professor at Northumbria University, notes that Hyrox events are a prime example, combining running with strength-based exercises like burpees and kettlebell carries. Over one million people entered a Hyrox race during the 2025/26 season, highlighting its popularity.

Research indicates numerous benefits, including improved strength, muscle mass, power, endurance, speed, and agility. Studies also report enhanced quality of life, reduced stress, and increased self-esteem among participants. Additionally, hybrid training is time-efficient, making it suitable for those with busy schedules.

Alexios Batrakoulis, an assistant professor at European University Cyprus, found that previously inactive middle-aged adults who completed a 30-minute hybrid programme up to three times a week experienced significant reductions in body mass and fat after 10 to 12 months. This underscores the effectiveness of hybrid training for overall health and fitness.
