DVLA Urges Drivers Aged 70+ to Renew Licences Today

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has issued a timely reminder to drivers aged 70 and over, urging them to renew their driving licence online. The process is free of charge and can be completed quickly and securely via the GOV.UK website.

Why Renewal Is Necessary

Drivers aged 70 and above must renew their driving licence every three years, unlike younger motorists who renew every decade. This regulation ensures that older drivers remain fit to drive. The DVLA encourages eligible drivers to act promptly to avoid any lapse in their driving entitlement.

How to Renew Online

If you are 70 or over, or will turn 70 within the next 90 days, you can renew your licence online at no cost. The DVLA states that applications submitted online typically result in a new licence arriving within one week. To use the online service, you must:

  • Hold a British driving licence that has expired or is due to expire within 90 days
  • Be a resident of Great Britain (separate arrangements apply in Northern Ireland)
  • Meet the minimum eyesight requirement
  • Not be disqualified from driving for any reason

You can also update your licence photograph while renewing. However, this service does not cover renewals for C1 (medium-sized vehicles) or D1 (minibus) entitlements, which must be done by post.

First-Time Users

If you are using the online service for the first time, you will need to register with an email address, your residential addresses for the past three years, your National Insurance number (if known), and a valid UK passport number if you wish to update your photo. After submitting your application, the DVLA will send a confirmation email. You may be invited to participate in research via email, but you can opt out if you prefer.

Driving While Awaiting Renewal

You can continue driving while your licence is being renewed, provided all the following conditions are met:

  • You have your doctor's approval to continue driving
  • You held a valid licence
  • You comply with the conditions of your previous licence
  • Your application is less than one year old
  • Your last licence was not revoked or denied due to medical reasons
  • You are not currently disqualified
  • You were not disqualified as a high-risk offender on or after 1 June 2013

Renewing by Post

Alternatively, you can apply by post using the D46P application form, which the DVLA automatically sends 90 days before your 70th birthday. If you do not have this form, you can use the D1 application for a driving licence form, available at most Post Offices. Postal applications typically take up to three weeks, but may take longer if your medical or personal information needs to be verified.

The DVLA reminds all eligible drivers: "Grab a cuppa and renew today at http://gov.uk/renewat70. It's easy, quick and secure."
