Barclays has officially shut down its Barclaycard website as of today, instructing customers to manage their accounts through the Barclays mobile app instead. The decision, according to the bank, reflects a growing preference among users for digital banking solutions.
Why the Change?
A Barclays spokesperson explained that the move follows a review aimed at simplifying customer experience. The dedicated Barclaycard website is being replaced by account servicing via Barclays online banking, which can be accessed through the app or web browser. Customers will still be able to apply for new cards, manage existing accounts, and seek support via the Barclaycard or Barclays apps, telephone banking, or in-branch visits.
An email sent to customers, as shared on Reddit, stated: "Your Barclaycard online servicing is closing on 10 June 2026. We understand that a change like this can be unexpected, but this won't affect your account or how you use your card in any way. Please keep using the Barclaycard app to manage your account."
Customer Impact
Barclaycard, the credit card arm of Barclays, boasts over five million customer accounts in the UK. The bank emphasized that the transition will be gradual, ensuring no loss of access for regular online banking users. Customers who prefer not to use the app can still manage their accounts via telephone banking or at physical branches.
High Street Return
This digital shift comes alongside reports that Barclays plans to reverse its branch closure trend. According to The Times, Barclays intends to open new high street branches and reintroduce "bank managers" to provide personalized assistance. Since 2018, the bank has closed over 800 branches, leaving approximately 206 operational across the UK.
Vim Maru, CEO of Barclays UK, stated: "Of course we're going to be great in digital – but we're going to be there for you when you need some help and support. You're not going to be stuck in some chatbot trying to get out of the loop and trying to speak to someone."
The closure of the Barclaycard website marks a significant step in Barclays' digital transformation, while its commitment to physical branches aims to balance convenience with human touch.
