The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed that pensions and benefits payments will proceed as normal on Monday, June 15, for UK households, despite a special bank holiday. The bank holiday applies exclusively to Scotland, marking the nation's participation in the men's World Cup 2026, its first appearance in the tournament since 1998.
Background of the Bank Holiday
The holiday was initially proposed by First Minister John Swinney to allow people, businesses, and organizations to celebrate Scotland's opening match against Haiti. His Majesty King Charles approved the Royal Proclamation in February 2026.
DWP Payment Schedule
Typically, when a benefits or pension payment falls on a bank holiday, the DWP issues it on the earliest working day prior. However, for the World Cup bank holiday in Scotland, the DWP has confirmed no disruptions. A DWP spokesperson told The Express: "Payments will still process as they do for other Scottish Bank Holidays. Government Banking have confirmed that Bacs does not close for Scottish only Bank Holidays."
Benefits Paid on June 15
Households expecting any of the following DWP benefits on Monday, June 15, will receive them on that day:
- Attendance Allowance
- Carer's Allowance
- Disability Living Allowance
- Employment Support Allowance
- Jobseeker's Allowance
- Maternity Allowance
- Pension Credit
- Personal Independence Payment
- State Pension
- Universal Credit
State Pension Payment Dates
State pensioners can determine their June payment date by checking their National Insurance number. The final two digits indicate the payment day:
- 00 to 19: Monday
- 20 to 39: Tuesday
- 40 to 59: Wednesday
- 60 to 79: Thursday
- 80 to 99: Friday
Thus, pensioners with NI numbers ending in 00 to 19 will be paid on Monday, which may coincide with the World Cup holiday. Payments will still occur as normal, with no early payment scheduled.
Social Security Scotland Benefits
Social Security Scotland benefits will also be paid as usual in June, unaffected by the World Cup bank holiday. These include:
- Adult Disability Payment
- Carer Support Payment
- Child Disability Payment
- Pension Age Disability Payment
- Scottish Child Payment
- Scottish Adult Disability Living Allowance
A Social Security Scotland spokesperson confirmed: "Just to confirm that Monday, 15 June, is a Scottish Public Holiday and doesn't affect payments."
