Super Typhoon Fung-wong Hits Philippines, Millions Evacuated

Nearly a Million Flee as Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes

The Philippines is facing a severe natural disaster as Super Typhoon Fung-wong, the most powerful storm to threaten the nation this year, began pummelling its northeastern coastline on Sunday, 9th November 2025. The colossal weather system has triggered the evacuation of close to a million individuals from vulnerable regions.

State of Emergency Declared Amidst Catastrophic Warnings

With sustained winds recorded at 185 kilometres per hour and destructive gusts reaching 230kmph, the typhoon is projected to make landfall in the Aurora or Isabela province. The storm's immense scale is a critical concern, boasting a vast rain and wind band stretching approximately 1,600 kilometres wide. In response to the imminent danger, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr has declared a state of emergency for the country, which is still grappling with the aftermath of Typhoon Kalmaegi that resulted in 204 fatalities.

Authorities have undertaken a massive evacuation effort, moving over 916,860 people from high-risk zones, including the Bicol region. Storm alert signals have been raised across large portions of the archipelago, with the most severe Signal No. 5 being issued in several areas.

International Aid Readied as Officials Urge Compliance

Defence Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr has made a urgent public appeal, strongly encouraging residents to adhere to all evacuation orders due to the storm's potentially catastrophic impact. He emphasised that the primary priority is the safety and preservation of life. The gravity of the situation has prompted an international response, with both the United States and Japan confirming they are prepared to offer assistance to the Philippines in its hour of need.
