Sir James Dyson Acquires 50% Stake in Premiership Champions Bath Rugby
James Dyson Buys 50% Stake in Bath Rugby Club

In a significant development for English rugby, Sir James Dyson, the renowned inventor and business magnate, has purchased a 50 per cent stake in Bath Rugby, the reigning Premiership champions. This investment positions Dyson as an equal co-owner alongside Bruce Craig, who has owned the club since 2010.

A Lifelong Fan Steps Up

Sir James Dyson, celebrated for inventing the bagless vacuum cleaner and ranked as the fourth richest person in the UK according to the Sunday Times Rich List, has been a devoted Bath supporter for 45 years. He has frequently attended matches at The Recreation Ground, the club's historic home, and now brings his substantial resources to bolster the team's ambitions.

"This is the club I have supported for most of my life," Dyson stated. "My children and my grandchildren do so too. I stood on the terraces and have watched the high moments as well as the difficult years. Bruce deserves enormous respect for rebuilding the club to be the force that it is today and I am not here to change that. I am here to support, just as I have for the past forty five years but now with greater commitment and responsibility."

Driving Forward Stadium Plans

The partnership between Dyson and Craig is expected to accelerate long-standing plans for a new stadium in Bath. In September, Bath and North East Somerset Council gave overwhelming backing, with an 8-1 vote, to construct an 18,000-seater venue on the same site the club has occupied for over 130 years.

Initial proposals to modernise The Rec and enhance facilities were first submitted in 2018, though discussions have spanned much longer. Delays have arisen from design alterations and legal disputes, but Dyson's investment is viewed as crucial for realising this vision and securing the club's future.

A Boost for Premiership Rugby

Dyson's entry into rugby ownership follows a period of strategic shifts in Premiership Rugby, including the recent move away from promotion and relegation towards a franchising model. This change aims to attract new investment, as seen with Red Bull's purchase of Newcastle and talks with Knighthead Capital, owners of Birmingham City Football Club and investors in cricket's The Hundred, regarding potential expansion teams.

Simon Massie-Taylor, chief executive of Premiership Rugby, welcomed the news: "This is great news for Bath Rugby and their loyal and dedicated fans. This announcement is testament to the stewardship of Bruce Craig and his leadership team at the club and confirms just how attractive Premiership Rugby now is to investors. Everyone associated with Premiership Rugby is excited to see Bath continue to grow as they now accelerate their exciting plans for their new stadium."

Under Craig's ownership, Bath achieved a treble of trophies last season, culminating in their Premiership championship victory. Dyson's involvement is poised to build on this success, with both owners committed to strengthening the club's foundations and ensuring its prosperity in the years ahead.
