Ratcliffe Praises Carrick's 'Excellent' Man Utd Interim Role

Sir Jim Ratcliffe Delivers Verdict on Michael Carrick's Manchester United Tenure

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the co-owner of Manchester United, has publicly commended Michael Carrick for his excellent performance as the club's interim head coach. However, Ratcliffe carefully avoided making any commitments regarding Carrick's prospects for securing the permanent managerial position at Old Trafford.

Carrick's Impressive Interim Stint

Michael Carrick, aged 44, was appointed as Manchester United's interim head coach until the conclusion of the current season following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim earlier this year. Under his temporary leadership, the team has achieved a notable record of six victories from eight matches, sparking widespread discussion about his long-term suitability for the role.

Ratcliffe, who was attending the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai with Mercedes, addressed Carrick's situation during an impromptu interview with Sky Sports. "He's doing an excellent job," Ratcliffe stated unequivocally. When pressed on whether Carrick would be offered the permanent position if results continue positively, Ratcliffe smiled and replied, "I'm not going there."

Champions League Ambitions and League Position

The Manchester United co-owner also touched upon the club's ambitions for Champions League qualification. "Clearly we're thinking about that but there's still seven or eight games to go," Ratcliffe remarked, acknowledging the competitive nature of the Premier League run-in.

Currently, Manchester United occupies a strong position in the league table, sitting on 51 points, level with Aston Villa, whom they face this weekend. Only Manchester City and Arsenal are ahead of United, highlighting the team's improved form under Carrick's guidance. Aston Villa, previously comfortable in third place, have experienced a dip in form, dropping to fourth ahead of their visit to Old Trafford.

Squad Updates and Injury Concerns

Carrick has largely benefited from having a near-full squad available for most of his matches in charge, though recent fitness issues have emerged. Key players such as Lisandro Martinez, Patrick Dorgu, and Matthijs de Ligt are currently sidelined due to injuries.

On a positive note, Carrick confirmed that Mason Mount is nearing a return to action. "Mason is back with the group, which is fantastic. He's not 100 per cent, because he's only trained with us a small amount of time, but he's back, and that's good for us. So, we'll see if he's involved or not," Carrick explained during a press conference.

External Endorsements and Future Prospects

A victory over Aston Villa, another European competitor, could further bolster Carrick's case for being retained as manager next season. Former Manchester United player Michael Owen has voiced strong support for Carrick's permanent appointment.

Speaking on the BBC podcast The Wayne Rooney Show, Owen argued, "I can't believe people are questioning whether he should get the job. Manchester United have waited about 12 years - they've gone for proven, legends, everything since Sir Alex [Ferguson]. And the one time they are starting to play well, get results, the fans are on board - you're telling me at the end of the season if he gets third [place] they will say 'thanks, but no thanks'. How is that possible?"

As the season approaches its climax, all eyes will be on Carrick's ability to maintain United's momentum and secure a coveted top-four finish, which may ultimately influence the club's decision on his future.
