Rory McIlroy's Putting Struggles Highlighted in Dramatic Players Championship Cut
Rory McIlroy has openly discussed the significant challenges he faced during the second round of the Players Championship, where the reigning Masters champion barely secured his spot for the weekend. McIlroy carded a one-under par round of 71, bringing his total score to one-over par at the halfway mark of the prestigious tournament held at TPC Sawgrass in Florida.
Leaderboard Dynamics and McIlroy's Position
Ludvig Aberg currently commands the lead after two rounds, posting an impressive nine-under-par 63 to reach 12-under, placing him two shots ahead of second-placed Xander Schauffele. In stark contrast, McIlroy finds himself 13 shots behind the leader, tied for 51st place alongside 10 other players, including World No.1 Scottie Scheffler. This precarious position meant McIlroy only just managed to make the cut, with those finishing three over or worse being eliminated from the competition.
The 36-year-old defending champion demonstrated crucial resilience by sinking a birdie on the final hole of his second round, which elevated his total score to one-over par. Notably, a score of two over par would have been sufficient to advance to the weekend, underscoring the narrow margin of his survival in the tournament.
McIlroy's Recovery and Technical Issues
McIlroy entered the Players Championship following a withdrawal before the third round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational last week due to a back injury. However, he has recovered in time to compete in Florida, returning to TPC Sawgrass for this week's event. Despite his physical recovery, McIlroy has pinpointed a specific technical issue affecting his performance on the greens.
"I felt a little bit better," McIlroy explained to Sky Sports. "I would say if anything it was just I was struggling to trust everything was OK yesterday. I struggled a little bit on lies that were beneath my feet and stuff like that, but today I felt pretty good and felt like I hit the ball well. I really just couldn’t get a putt to drop. That was the issue."
He added, "I tried my best, I grinded and made a good birdie at the last, hopefully to make the cut. Game feels good, I just went five or six days without really touching a club or doing anything, so just getting my feels back a little. Hopefully another couple of days to get myself up the leaderboard. I’m 11 back at the minute, I’m not sure I’m going to contend for the title, but hopefully two good days and have a respectable finish."
Upcoming Round and Tournament Outlook
McIlroy is scheduled to tee off at 9.55 ET (2.55pm UK time) for his third round in Florida, where he will be paired with Joe Highsmith. As he aims for improved performances in the final rounds, his focus will likely remain on overcoming the putting difficulties that have hampered his progress so far. With the leaderboard tightly contested, McIlroy's ability to address these issues could determine whether he can climb from his current mid-table position and secure a more favourable outcome in one of golf's most challenging tournaments.
