Steven Gerrard Calls for Liverpool Lineup Change After Wolves Defeat
Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard has made a bold demand to manager Arne Slot, urging him to drop forward Cody Gakpo and promote teenage sensation Rio Ngumoha to the starting eleven. Gerrard's comments come after Liverpool's disappointing late loss to Wolves, where Ngumoha made a significant impact off the bench.
Ngumoha's Stellar Cameo Sparks Selection Debate
Rio Ngumoha, aged just 17, entered the match against Wolves as a substitute and immediately threatened the opposition defence. His performance included a powerful shot that was pushed onto the post and a precise delivery to Virgil van Dijk, who missed a headed opportunity. This display followed his earlier breakout moment this season, where he scored a late winner against Newcastle.
Gerrard, analysing the game for TNT Sports, was emphatic in his assessment. "He has to start Ngumoha now," he stated. "He's coming on and doing more in a short cameo than Gakpo's doing in 65, 70 minutes. He deserves to start now. He's got to start the kid on Friday night in the FA Cup."
Gerrard Criticises Liverpool's Overall Performance
Beyond the individual selection issue, Gerrard expressed frustration with Liverpool's overall display at Molineux, which dealt a blow to their Champions League aspirations. He highlighted a lack of urgency and quality, particularly in the first half.
"The first half was a complete waste from a Liverpool point of view," Gerrard said. "No urgency, no ball speed change when you got into the final third, there wasn't much quality or penetration."
He also pointed to defensive frailties, noting: "They've got to stop conceding really poor goals... If they want to progress in the FA Cup, they have to defend a lot better."
Context of Slot's Caution and Gakpo's Struggles
Manager Arne Slot has previously advocated for a measured approach to Ngumoha's development, suggesting the youngster is receiving appropriate playing time for his age. Meanwhile, Cody Gakpo has struggled for form this season, failing to reach double figures in goals despite regular appearances.
Gerrard's intervention adds pressure ahead of Liverpool's upcoming FA Cup clash with Wolves, where he believes Ngumoha's energy and impact warrant a starting role over the underperforming Gakpo.
