Manchester United's Ambitious 'Project 150' Aims for Premier League Glory by 2028
Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has declared that the club is "hungry" to win the Premier League title within the next two years, as part of the ambitious "Project 150" initiative. Launched in September 2024 by chief executive Omar Berrada, this strategic plan sets the goal for United to become champions again by 2028, coinciding with the club's 150th anniversary.
From Struggles to Revival Under Carrick's Leadership
Last season, United endured a disappointing campaign, finishing only 15th under former manager Ruben Amorim. However, the team has experienced a significant resurgence under Carrick's guidance and is currently on track to secure qualification for the Champions League. This turnaround marks a positive step towards the long-term objectives of Project 150.
Carrick emphasized a cautious yet determined approach, stating, "You've got to take step by a step, I think. Certainly we want to keep improving and we want to keep moving up the table." He acknowledged the challenges ahead, noting that winning the Premier League is "tough" and requires substantial effort, but reaffirmed the club's commitment: "We are definitely working towards it, we feel that’s where we want to be."
Focus on Immediate Targets Amid Long-Term Ambitions
While the ultimate goal is Premier League success, Carrick is not getting carried away and insists on focusing on more immediate targets. United face a crucial match against Aston Villa on Sunday, a key rival for Champions League qualification. Carrick stressed a game-by-game mentality, saying, "It's literally game by game, and trying to win. You can't plan for if you finish fourth or fifth, really."
The manager also commented on the UEFA coefficient, which currently positions English clubs to secure five Champions League spots next season. He added, "There needs to be quite a big swing for it to not be fifth, but ultimately, that's not something that we can control and ideally, we'd like to be fighting above that anyway."
A Legacy of Success and Future Aspirations
Manchester United have not won the Premier League since 2013, making the pursuit of Project 150 a poignant mission for the club. Carrick reflected on this history, stating, "We have been in the past and we want to get there again, but it's certainly just not straightforward." Despite the complexities, he expressed unwavering hunger within the squad to achieve this goal, highlighting the collective drive to return to the pinnacle of English football.
As United continues its campaign, the balance between short-term performance and long-term ambition remains central to Carrick's strategy, with fans eagerly watching to see if Project 150 can bring the glory days back to Old Trafford.
