Michael Carrick has admitted he was 'very affected' by news of Sir Alex Ferguson's health scare prior to Manchester United's victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford. The Red Devils legend was taken to hospital after feeling unwell while meeting fans at the stadium. The move was purely precautionary, and Ferguson is now understood to be in good spirits.
Ferguson's Health Scare
Ferguson was swiftly escorted from Old Trafford in an ambulance after beginning to feel unwell. The 83-year-old former manager is now feeling much better, and his mood will have been lifted by United's dramatic 3-2 win over their fierce rivals.
Speaking after the game, Carrick said: "I don't know the latest as we stand now. I did hear about it before the game. All I can say is I was very affected by it and we just hope he's alright. I just don't know the latest but we hope for him to be in good shape and we wish him all the best and we're certainly thinking of him. And hopefully the result, when he hears about it, gives him a good boost."
Match Recap
United took a 2-0 lead into half-time thanks to goals from Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko. Liverpool fought back early in the second half through Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo. However, Kobbie Mainoo's stunning strike from the edge of the box sealed the points and secured Champions League football for United next season.
The result moved United six points clear of Liverpool, consolidating their third-place position in the Premier League and strengthening Carrick's case for the permanent manager role.
Mainoo Backs Carrick
Match-winner Mainoo has no doubt that Carrick should keep the job for next season. "He's played a huge part," said Mainoo. "The confidence in not just me but all the players. You want to follow him and fight for him and die for him on the pitch. That's what we showed today. To turn it around the way we have done, it's a credit to the players and the manager as well. We are just looking forward and still need to finish the season strong. It's not enough for us. We want to just keep on winning and winning."
