Tottenham climbed out of the Premier League relegation zone with a crucial 2-1 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park. Goals from Conor Gallagher and Richarlison in the first half secured the win, despite a late reply from Emiliano Buendia.
First-half dominance
Tottenham produced their best performance of the season to claim three vital points. Gallagher opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a powerful 25-yard strike after a long throw was cleared. Richarlison doubled the lead in the 25th minute, heading home from close range after goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez misjudged a cross.
The visitors pressed relentlessly and looked a different side under manager Roberto De Zerbi, reminiscent of his Brighton team. They registered back-to-back league victories for the first time since August and now sit above West Ham in the table.
Aston Villa's off night
Aston Villa, with one eye on their Europa League semi-final second leg against Nottingham Forest, made seven changes and produced their worst display of the season. They managed only one shot on target, Buendia's header in the sixth minute of added time, which came too late to affect the result.
Unai Emery's side missed the chance to all but secure a Champions League spot. Tottenham, meanwhile, face Leeds at home next and could further improve their position.
The win was built on a high-pressing game that forced errors from Villa. Gallagher's opener came after a mistake in Villa's buildup play, and the midfielder's first club goal was a highlight. Richarlison's header from a corner sealed the victory, with Spurs looking stronger, quicker, and smarter throughout.
Despite Villa's late consolation, Tottenham deserved their win and made a significant step toward survival.
