Riccardo Calafiori believes Arsenal have sent a “clear message” of intent to Manchester City after their emphatic 3-0 victory over Fulham on Saturday. The Gunners extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to six points, putting pressure on City ahead of their crucial match against Everton on Monday.
Dominant Display at the Emirates
Mikel Arteta’s side produced arguably their finest performance of the season, with Viktor Gyokeres scoring twice and Bukayo Saka adding another in a ruthless first-half display. The result saw Arsenal leapfrog City, who have a game in hand, and stake a strong claim for the title.
“It was a clear message,” said Calafiori, whose goal was disallowed for offside. “The crowd was good, the atmosphere was unbelievable. It was a huge moment, good for confidence, and when we do things well, there are not many teams that can beat us. That’s the key.”
Focus on Champions League
Arsenal now turn their attention to the second leg of their Champions League semi-final against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday, with the tie finely poised at 1-1 after the first leg in Spain. Calafiori stressed the importance of taking things step by step.
“We have to take it step-by-step because on Tuesday we have a massive game, and we are focusing on that too,” he added. “We are fighting for everything at this moment. It is the most important part of the season, and we have to be ready.”
Saka’s Return Inspires
Bukayo Saka made his first start since recovering from an Achilles injury sustained in the Carabao Cup final defeat to City on March 22. He provided the assist for Gyokeres’ opener before scoring himself just before half-time. Saka was substituted at the interval to ensure he is fully fit for the Champions League clash.
“You saw what he did against Fulham,” Calafiori said. “He still needs to find his form again, but he’s an unbelievable player, and we want everyone available. He’s one of our best players, and he’s going to help us a lot. I’m pretty confident of that.”
