Portsmouth Star Adrian Segecic Switches Allegiance from Australia to Croatia
Adrian Segecic Switches from Australia to Croatia

In a significant development for international football, one of Australia's most promising young talents appears to have been permanently lost to the Socceroos. Portsmouth's dynamic attacker Adrian Segecic has formally switched his international allegiance to Croatia, a decision confirmed through official FIFA channels.

FIFA Paperwork Finalised

Less than three months before Australia's World Cup opener in Vancouver, Segecic's paperwork was processed on Friday and became visible on FIFA's Change of Association platform on Saturday. Under strict FIFA regulations, once Segecic is fielded in an official match by Croatia, he will be permanently locked into representing the European nation and unable to switch back to Australia.

The only potential reversal would require Segecic to submit a formal request to FIFA's Football Tribunal if he doesn't play for Croatia and wishes to reconsider his decision. However, this remains a complex procedural hurdle.

Australian Youth Development Lost

The 21-year-old forward has deep roots in Australian football development, having represented the nation at under-17, under-20, and under-23 levels. He received his first senior call-up under manager Tony Popovic for September's international window against New Zealand but didn't feature in either match and hasn't been recalled since.

Segecic had previously expressed his desire to play for Australia at the World Cup on multiple occasions, making his decision to switch allegiances particularly surprising. Since joining Portsmouth, he has contributed six goals and two assists across all competitions, demonstrating the attacking quality Australia will now miss.

Croatian Competition Looms

It remains unclear how quickly Segecic might feature for his chosen nation, given the considerable talent available to world number eleven-ranked Croatia. The European side has upcoming friendlies against Colombia and Brazil this month, providing potential opportunities for debut appearances.

Segecic follows in the footsteps of Canberra-born, Australian-raised defender Josip Simunic, who opted to represent Croatia over Australia back in 2001. He also joins midfielder Nectar Triantis, who attended a Socceroos camp before switching to represent Greece, where he has since made his international debut.

Blow to Australian World Cup Preparations

This decision represents a substantial setback for Australia's attacking options ahead of their World Cup campaign. The timing is particularly unfortunate as the Socceroos prepare for warm-up friendlies against Cameroon and Curacao in Segecic's hometown of Sydney and later Melbourne this month.

Manager Tony Popovic has repeatedly emphasized that he won't be "selling" the Socceroos shirt to players eligible for multiple nations. While Manchester City's Alex Robertson has committed to Australia, the national team still awaits a decision from Italy youth international Cristian Volpato.

The 22-year-old Volpato previously declined approaches from former manager Graham Arnold ahead of the 2022 World Cup but has recently shown more openness to representing Australia. He met with Popovic and assistant Paul Okon in Italy last month for discussions.

"We are not selling the shirt," Popovic stated firmly. "There were no ultimatums or any pressure, it was a discussion... they are young men, you have to respect the decisions they have to make. He (Volpato) has indicated he's open to the idea, now the rest is just for him to decide."

As Australia continues its World Cup preparations, the loss of Segecic to Croatia highlights the ongoing challenges facing nations with dual-eligible players in modern international football.
