Delia Ramirez Confronts Kristi Noem in Tense DHS Meeting
Democratic Congresswoman Delia Ramirez engaged in a heated private meeting with Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem on Wednesday, pressing for her resignation over alleged misconduct by immigration officials. The encounter, described as "combative" by Ramirez, marked the first one-on-one session Noem has held with a Democratic lawmaker since assuming her role last year.
Accusations of Lying and Law Violations
During the meeting in Washington DC, Ramirez accused Noem of "viciously lying" when questioned about DHS officers reportedly breaking the law. She cited examples including the use of force against immigrants and protesters, lack of due process for arrests, and violations of court orders. Ramirez, a vocal pro-immigrant representative from Illinois, stated that Noem refused to acknowledge these issues, instead "playing dumb" about the actions of her agents.
"I needed to look at evil in the eye and make sure she understood that I will continue to work and ensure she no longer leads the department," Ramirez told the Guardian in a phone interview.
Context of Government Shutdown and Enforcement Scrutiny
The meeting occurred against the backdrop of a partial government shutdown affecting the DHS, as Democrats and the White House clash over funding provisions. Democrats are advocating for changes to immigration enforcement tactics, particularly after federal officers killed two US citizen protesters in Minneapolis during recent clashes. Under Noem's leadership, the DHS has faced heightened scrutiny for aggressive anti-immigrant crackdowns nationwide, sparking voter backlash and mass demonstrations.
Ramirez has been a persistent critic, repeatedly calling for Noem's resignation throughout the second Trump administration and initiating impeachment steps last month. She warned that if Noem does not resign, Democrats may impeach her, or she could be fired by Donald Trump.
DHS Response and Ongoing Tensions
A DHS spokesperson responded via email, stating that Secretary Noem meets with members of Congress regularly, regardless of party, and that this meeting fulfilled a commitment from her December hearing. The spokesperson criticized Ramirez, urging her to focus on funding the DHS to protect Americans from threats rather than political maneuvers.
Ramirez's letter to Noem after the meeting highlighted specific incidents, such as federal agents handcuffing a local official in a Chicago hospital during an arrest attempt. She also pressed Noem on use-of-force policies, including a teargassing incident outside a school, which Noem allegedly claimed ignorance about.
Internal Strife and Future Implications
Reports indicate internal strife within the DHS, with top officials divided over enforcement tactics, exacerbated by the deadly shootings in Minneapolis. Ramirez believes Noem's days are numbered, citing her own role in leading impeachment efforts. She and other Democrats have called for re-establishing protected areas from immigration enforcement, such as churches and hospitals, which were compromised under a Trump administration memo.
Noem has previously dismissed impeachment calls, accusing "radicals" of attacking her for performing her duties. However, Ramirez remains steadfast, asserting that her position on Noem's leadership has not changed and that she will continue to push for accountability.
