Tech Executive's Vision: A Colossal Prometheus Monument for Alcatraz

Crypto entrepreneur Ross Calvin has unveiled an ambitious proposal to erect a 450-foot statue of Prometheus on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay. The $420 million project, dubbed the Great Colossus of Prometheus, would feature a gas-powered flaming torch and stand as a tribute to the Greek mythological figure who defied the gods to bring fire to humanity.

Transforming a Historic Prison into a Monumental Attraction

The plan envisions transforming the site of the former federal penitentiary, which now attracts approximately 1.2 million tourists annually, into a lush garden complex with a museum showcasing technological breakthroughs from the telescope to artificial intelligence. Calvin, founder of crypto mining firm Parhelion Digital, sees this as a gift to the American people, timed to coincide with President Donald Trump's celebrations marking 250 years of American independence.

However, the proposal faces significant hurdles, including convincing the Trump administration to hand over control of the federally-managed island, which generates about $60 million in yearly revenue through the National Park Service's Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Political Connections and Monumental Ambitions

Calvin, who describes himself as both anti-authoritarian and right-leaning in certain aspects, believes his project could gain traction through White House connections. He claims to have sent a letter to President Trump via a friend at Mar-a-Lago last December, shortly after which Trump posted on Truth Social about building monuments to American heroes.

The entrepreneur hopes to secure a meeting with administration officials within six months and suggests the island could be designated as a National Monument to facilitate the statue's construction. He is also developing a private, for-profit fund backed by real estate and crypto assets, reportedly attracting interest from major investors including those in the Middle East.

Trump's Monumental Agenda and Competing Visions

President Trump's background in real estate development and his administration's focus on monumental projects could work in Calvin's favor. The White House has already demolished the East Wing to build a $300 million gilded ballroom, funded partly by tech and crypto donations, and is considering an Arc de Triomphe-style monument on the National Mall.

Nevertheless, Trump has expressed different plans for Alcatraz, proposing to reopen the decaying facility as a prison at an estimated cost of $2 billion. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and Attorney General Pam Bondi inspected the island this summer to assess this possibility, while a separate seismic remodeling project for the Main Prison Building is budgeted at $63.6 million through 2027.

Prometheus: Symbol of Freedom or Hubris?

Calvin views Prometheus as embodying American ideals of rebellion and the pursuit of happiness, calling him "the first freedom fighter" and a "regime-busting, no-kings guy." This mythological figure has gained popularity in tech circles, with Amazon's Jeff Bezos naming an AI startup Project Prometheus and Meta planning to christen a data center after him.

Critics, however, point out that the myth warns against hubris, as Prometheus's actions led to divine punishment and suffering. Bay Area historian Adrian Covert has proposed an alternative monument featuring Lady Justice, arguing that "America's founding ideal is liberty and justice for all."

Controversy and Criticism

Gil Duran, a journalist covering the tech world's right-wing elements, dismissed the proposal as "a perfect mix of phallicism and fascism" and "a deranged publicity stunt" reflecting Silicon Valley's failed imagination. He suggested Ozymandias would be a more fitting name, referencing Percy Bysshe Shelley's poem about the fleeting nature of monumental pride.

Calvin defends his vision as anti-authoritarian and inclusive, despite expressing skepticism about identity politics movements like Black Lives Matter and concerns about immigration from "incredibly incompatible cultures." He insists the monument aims to provoke conversations beyond contemporary political divisions.

Crypto Industry's Growing Political Influence

The proposal emerges amid deepening ties between the crypto industry and Washington. Cryptocurrency firms were the largest corporate donors in the 2024 elections, predominantly supporting Republicans. High-profile figures like the Winklevoss twins endorse Trump, who has promoted a national Bitcoin reserve and whose family has earned substantial revenue from crypto ventures.

As the debate continues, Alcatraz remains a symbol of complex American narratives—from its history as a prison housing infamous criminals like Al Capone to its role in Native American protests during the Civil Rights Era. Whether it will become home to a towering Prometheus or retain its current form, the island's future continues to spark passionate discussion about national identity, technology, and the power of monuments.
