Joy Reid Confronts Heckler at Anti-Trump Rally During State of the Union Address

Former MSNBC star Joy Reid found herself in a heated exchange with a heckler during an alternative State of the Union rally on Tuesday. The incident occurred at a counter-rally in Washington, DC, organized by left-wing groups including MeidasTouch and MoveOn in protest of the current administration.

Heckler Interrupts Speech on Immigration Case

As Reid, 57, was discussing the case of Kilmar Armando Ábrego García, a Salvadoran man who was illegally deported by the Trump administration last year, an off-screen attendee shouted, 'Joy Reid! You suck! You’re a loser!' The former journalist responded with characteristic defiance, stating, 'Oh, look at that. My fans are back! What I always say is–' before being cut off again by cries of 'Shame on you! Shame on you!'

Reid continued her sentence, asserting, '–you know who I am, and I don’t know who you are. That means you’re a fan, you’re fan, you’re fans, you are a fan!' Her remarks drew cheers from the rest of the crowd, which had gathered for the 'People’s State of the Union' event while Donald Trump delivered his own speech crosstown.

Reid Embraces Slang and Welcomes Senator

Adding to her retort, Reid used a conjugated version of the popular slang term 'stan,' saying, 'Keep on stannin’ me! Keep on stannin’ me! I don’t know where the hell you are, but you know me. Hallelujah, keep on being my fan!' She then welcomed Democrat Senator Chris Van Hollen of Maryland onto the stage, though he too faced disruption from a MAGA supporter who infiltrated the event.

The heckler yelled, 'They snuck in the border! They snuck in the border! Go Trump! Go Trump!' before being promptly pulled from the stage. As he was escorted off, he took a shot at another prominent attendee, Democratic Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut, calling him a scumbag. Murphy responded calmly with, 'Thanks, man. Thanks buddy,' as the event continued.

Background on Reid's Departure from MSNBC

Reid's appearance at the rally comes after her controversial exit from MSNBC, which was renamed MS NOW. She was fired in February 2025 following extreme online rants that rankled network brass. An insider told Politico that her social media posts, including shaming Latino Republicans for voting for Trump and claiming media focus on Russia's invasion of Ukraine was due to victims being 'white and largely Christian,' gave the Standards Department 'heartburn.'

Network bosses began plotting to remove Reid in late 2023, ultimately offering her a one-year contract extension with a pay cut in hopes she would quit. When she was finally let go, her ratings had plummeted from a high of 3 million viewers per episode in 2020 to a low of 1.1 million. Since her departure, Reid has started a popular Substack, joining other figures like Jim Acosta, Terry Moran, and Don Lemon in the platform.
