A Georgia mother is facing unimaginable grief as she struggles to bring her daughter's body home after a tragic ziplining accident during a Caribbean birthday celebration. Tamirah Dix, a 40-year-old Atlanta resident, died in Puerto Rico on Saturday after allegedly striking her head during a ziplining excursion and later experiencing seizures.
Family's Desperate Plea for Help
Vanessa Dix, Tamirah's heartbroken mother, told reporters through tears: 'I never thought I'd be burying my child.' The family, describing themselves as 'heartbroken and confused,' has launched a GoFundMe campaign to cover the substantial costs of transporting Tamirah's body back to her hometown of Marietta, Georgia.
'This loss has been devastating, and we are now faced with the challenge of bringing her home and arranging a proper farewell,' the fundraiser states. 'The costs of transportation to the state and funeral services are more than we can manage alone, so we are humbly asking for help from our community.'
Questions Surrounding the Tragedy
Despite Puerto Rican authorities completing their initial investigation and awaiting autopsy results, the family remains desperate for answers about Tamirah's sudden death. Shadi Dix, Tamirah's younger brother, expressed frustration about the lack of specific information.
'It doesn't sit right with y'all, it doesn't sit right with me,' Shadi told local news outlets. 'I don't know how it went down or went up - was it a branch, was it a leaf? Was she on the zipline or was it after the zipline? There are just so many questions and there's not any answers.'
The Final Hours
Tamirah was visiting Orocovis, a mountainous town approximately one hour outside San Juan, with her fiancé for a friend's birthday celebration. The area is renowned for outdoor activities including hiking, swimming, camping, and zipline adventures.
According to family accounts, Tamirah allegedly suffered a head injury during the ziplining activity. Later that evening, after complaining of nausea and vomiting, she went to sleep but began experiencing seizures. She died while being rushed to hospital.
A Life Cut Short
Friends and family remember Tamirah as an adventurous, fearless, and caring individual with a profound love for her family, particularly her nieces and nephews. Her niece Ryleigh described her as 'the best auntie I could ever have.'
Brittani Hebron, Tamirah's best friend since high school, recalled receiving the devastating news: 'I was just crushed. I had to pull over. I was on the way to do some hair, and on the highway, I had to pull over when I got the news.'
Hebron described their close bond, noting they considered themselves sisters and dubbed themselves the 'Golden Girls.' 'She'll lift me up, pick me up. She likes to elevate people,' Hebron said of her friend.
Educational Achievements
Tamirah was an accomplished student who had recently earned a degree in Health Information Management Technology from Georgia Piedmont Technical College. She was studying at Clayton State University and expected to graduate with a bachelor's degree in Applied Science in May 2029.
In a tribute, her college stated: 'She inspired those around her through her growth, determination and willingness to lead, making a meaningful and lasting impact on our college community.'
Community Support and Memorial Plans
As of Friday morning, the GoFundMe campaign had raised more than $18,370 toward its $20,000 goal. The family hopes to have Tamirah's body returned by the weekend to begin arranging funeral services.
Friends and family will gather for a vigil honoring Tamirah on Saturday, April 4, from 5pm to 8pm at 545 Washington Avenue in Marietta. The community continues to rally around the grieving family as they seek both closure and answers about this tragic accident that has left them devastated.
