Major Recall: 740,000 Kitchen Pan Sets Pose Burn Hazard

In a significant consumer safety alert, approximately 740,000 sets of kitchen pans sold through major retailers including Costco, Walmart, and Amazon have been urgently recalled due to a serious burn hazard. The recall, officially announced on Thursday, targets the Granitestone Diamond Pro Blue stainless steel sauté pans, which pose a direct risk of injury to users.

Critical Safety Defect Identified

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a stark warning regarding these pans. The agency has identified a critical flaw in the design: the metal cap on the screw that connects the pan to its handle can detach when the pan is heated. This detachment can cause the cap to "forcefully eject" from the pan, potentially leading to severe burns for anyone nearby.

According to the CPSC, this defect has already resulted in nearly 100 incident reports submitted to the importer, New York-based E Mishan & Sons, Inc. In one confirmed case, a consumer suffered both bruising and burn injuries directly attributed to the failing component. The commission emphasises that this is not an isolated issue but a widespread safety concern affecting a substantial volume of products.

Product Details and Retail Information

The recalled pans were sold as a two-piece set, comprising a 10-inch pan and an 11.5-inch pan. They were available for purchase at Costco physical stores and through various online platforms, including the official websites of Costco, Walmart, and Amazon. The sale period spanned from August 2021 through February of the previous year, indicating that many households may still have these items in their kitchens.

The CPSC advises all consumers who own these Granitestone pans to cease using them immediately. Owners are instructed to return the products to the point of purchase to obtain a full refund. This proactive measure is crucial to prevent further injuries and ensure household safety.

Additional Recall: Power Strips Also Pose Burn Risk

In a related consumer safety development, the CPSC has also highlighted a separate recall involving CCCEI Power Strips sold on Amazon. These power strips were recalled last week following reports of the products "sparking and melting." The recall was initiated by the China-based retailer, Middle Way Electronics, which has received at least two such reports.

While no fires or injuries have been reported to date, the commission warns that these power strips lack essential "supplementary overcurrent protection." This deficiency means the strips can overheat and catch fire if overloaded, creating a severe risk of burns, smoke inhalation, or even fatal injuries. Consumers are urged to stop using these power strips immediately and contact Middle Way Electronics for a full refund.

Broader Implications for Consumer Safety

These consecutive recalls underscore ongoing challenges in product safety and quality control within the retail sector. The scale of the pan recall—affecting three-quarters of a million units—demonstrates how widely distributed potentially hazardous goods can become before defects are identified. Both incidents highlight the vital role of regulatory bodies like the CPSC in monitoring products and issuing timely warnings to protect the public.

Consumers are reminded to regularly check recall notices from authoritative sources and to act promptly when safety alerts are issued. Ensuring that household items, especially those used in cooking or electrical applications, meet safety standards is essential for preventing accidents and injuries in the home.
