Elderly Female Offender Receives Prison Sentence for Decades-Old Child Sex Crimes

An 80-year-old woman has been imprisoned after being found guilty of carrying out a series of sickening sexual acts on a young boy during the 1980s. Hazel Templeton, now a resident of HMP Eastwood Park, was convicted on four counts of indecent assault following a trial at Newport Crown Court.

Detailed Account of Abuse and Lasting Trauma

The court heard how Templeton repeatedly indecently assaulted her victim, forcing him to touch her sexually and perform sex acts on her. Prosecutors revealed that the defendant had sex with the victim on two separate occasions, exploiting his innocence for her own sexual gratification.

In a powerful victim personal statement read to the court by prosecutor Jeffrey Jones, the now-adult victim described how the abuse had destroyed his life. "Following the guilty verdicts in this case I believed I would feel a sense of peace, stress levels would decrease and I would start to feel happy," he stated. "Instead I have found myself gasping for breath, breaking out in cold sweats, and crying with an overwhelming sense of loss and shame for what I allowed to happen."

The victim explained that the multiple crimes committed against him left him with severe trust issues that affected his relationships with parents and partners. "The emotional abuse far outweighs the physical," he told the court. "What she stole should never have been hers. She used her position of trust to threaten me, making it impossible to trust those who could have and should have been trusted to help."

Previous Convictions and Current Sentencing

Templeton has previous convictions for indecent assaults and gross indecency with a child. She was previously sentenced to two years and nine months imprisonment at Laganside Crown Court in Belfast in 2025 for those offences.

During the recent sentencing hearing, the court was informed that the victim had attempted to harm himself at the time of the original offences. The victim revealed in his statement: "I realised I was so effectively groomed, it went some way to explain my thoughts of suicide as a teenager, confused and unsure who to trust and feeling unsafe."

In mitigation, defence solicitor Sol Hartley argued that his client had never been in trouble in other aspects of her life and had held various community roles, including positions with a Parent-Teacher Association. He noted that Templeton's 90-year-old partner was "petrified" he would die before her release and that she was concerned about dying in prison.

Judge's Remarks and Final Sentence

Sentencing Templeton, Judge Celia Hughes stated that the victim had been psychologically damaged as a result of the abuse he suffered. "There is no evidence you have expressed any remorse or acceptance of your guilt for those sentences I sentence you for today," the judge declared.

Judge Hughes continued: "You have exploited the victim's innocence for your own sexual pleasure. It's quite shocking you behaved in this way to a teenage boy when you were a mother to similar aged daughters. You left him confused, fearful and at times suicidal."

Templeton was sentenced to three years and nine months imprisonment, to be served concurrently with her current sentence. The defendant was also made subject to sex offender notification requirements indefinitely, ensuring she remains on the register for life.

The case highlights the lasting impact of childhood sexual abuse, with victims often carrying psychological scars for decades after the offences occur. The sentencing serves as a reminder that justice can be pursued regardless of how much time has passed since the crimes were committed.
