Mary Portas Launches Blistering Attack on Fashion Industry Leadership
Mary Portas, the renowned English retail consultant and broadcaster, has never been one to conform to societal norms, a trait evident in her personal life with two marriages and divorces—first to Unilever executive Graham Portas and then to fashion journalist Melanie Rickey. However, this unconventional approach hardly prepared the fashion world for her recent brutal dissection, dubbed 'Mary Queen of Shops'.
A Withering Verdict on Fashion's Direction
During a Smart Works talk at the Mayfair Hotel in west London, Portas delivered a withering verdict on the state of the fashion industry. She asserted that the sector is predominantly led by homosexual men, whom she believes are disconnected from the needs of the average-sized woman. 'Look at the designers. Most are male gay designers,' Portas noted. 'They are designing for these iconic women in their heads. We have been sold that for absolutely years. It's very difficult to eradicate.'
Portas is unlikely to face accusations of homophobia, given her personal history. She and Melanie Rickey had a child together, with Portas's younger brother Lawrence serving as the biological father. Since then, Portas has found new love with an undisclosed woman, further highlighting her non-traditional lifestyle.
Targeting Anna Wintour's Influence
Perhaps Portas's most bracing observation centres on Dame Anna Wintour, whom she describes as 'one of the most powerful women in the world of fashion'. Portas, 65, pointed out that Wintour is 'tiny', and argued that her influence has distorted thinking across all catwalks. 'Where Wintour leads, all others follow,' she explained, noting that this has resulted in a prevalence of 'absolutely tiny young women and young men' on runways.
Portas reflected on conversations with individuals who equate thinness with being 'together, OK, not lazy, and not caring about one's body'. With such scathing remarks, it's improbable that Portas will grace the front row next season, but she remains unfazed. 'The fashion industry – I wouldn't want to get back to that,' she declared.
