Madonna Recreates Gondola Scene with Julia Garner in Venice

Madonna's Venetian Romance and Filming Adventure

The Queen of Pop, Madonna, has been sharing glimpses of her lavish Venetian holiday on Instagram, showcasing both romantic moments with her boyfriend and professional collaborations with actress Julia Garner. The 67-year-old icon appeared happier than ever during a gondola ride with toyboy boyfriend Akeem Morris, where the couple enjoyed Aperol Spritz cocktails on the famous canals.

Iconic Recreation with Biopic Star

Madonna has been in Venice filming the second season of The Studio with Ozark actress Julia Garner, 32, over the past week. During their time together, the pair recreated one of Madonna's most iconic moments - the famous gondola scene from her 1984 hit Like a Virgin. This recreation holds special significance as Julia Garner is set to portray Madonna in the long-awaited biopic about the star's life.

The two women rocked matching outfits during their Venetian adventures, both sporting striped white and navy T-shirts complemented by navy blazers and stylish straw hats. Elsewhere in the city, the duo were seen rehearsing dance moves in a studio space, while Madonna also posed dramatically in a fur shawl and long lace gloves aboard a boat.

Return to Acting After Two Decades

Madonna's role in the upcoming instalment of The Studio marks her significant return to screen acting after approximately two decades. Her last major acting role was a voice part in the 2006 animated feature Arthur and the Invisibles, directed by French filmmaker Luc Besson. Prior to that, she won a Golden Globe for her starring role in the 1995 movie musical Evita.

The last live-action acting job listed on her IMDb page is a cameo appearance in a 2003 episode of the popular sitcom Will & Grace. The Studio, co-created by and starring Seth Rogen as a stressed studio executive, features a cast including Ike Barinholtz, Chase Sui Wonders, and Kathryn Hahn.

Biopic Development and Production Challenges

Julia Garner confirmed last September that the Madonna biopic project remains in development despite production delays, telling W Magazine: "I can't say too much about it, but yes, it's a work in progress." Madonna has been persistent in her years-long effort to create a film about her life, initially working on a biopic called Who's That Girl in 2023 - a nod to her 1987 film and song of the same name.

The film was originally developed with Diablo Cody co-writing the screenplay under the working title Little Sparrow. However, Madonna shifted her focus to concentrate on her international Celebration tour. In 2024, she penned most of the film with Erin Cressida Wilson and eyed Garner to portray her.

Madonna took to social media in November to express frustration over roadblocks in bringing her film to life, writing on Instagram: "After struggling for days in LA, listening to producers and agents tell me why I couldn't make my film, I realized that everything in my life is going to be challenged." She noted she had been working on the project for four years with people suggesting she should "downsize, down scale, think smaller."

Historical Context and Career Parallels

Madonna simultaneously reached cinema and music stardom in the 1980s while starring opposite Rosanna Arquette in the comedy Desperately Seeking Susan. Arquette recalled in a Guardian interview last year that the Michigan native "exploded" into worldwide fame as a singer "as we were making" the film in 1985.

"It was pretty intense and overwhelming for her, but she handled it great. She wasn't a global superstar yet. She became one while we were doing that," Arquette said. "She had hits, but then I remember looking at her on the cover of Rolling Stone on set and thinking: 'Wow!'"

As Madonna continues her Venetian filming and romantic getaway, she captioned one of her Instagram posts simply: "Venice was Fun…………" The star's return to acting and ongoing biopic development continues to generate significant interest among fans and industry observers alike.
