Two marine volunteers were among three people killed after a rescue boat capsized while attempting to help a yacht in distress off the east coast of Australia. The incident occurred on Monday evening when emergency services were alerted to a yacht struggling near a breakwater in Ballina, a popular coastal town in northern New South Wales.
Details of the Incident
Marine Rescue NSW dispatched a team of six volunteers who rushed to assist the yacht. Their rescue vessel capsized while crossing the Ballina bar in heavy conditions, according to state police. The Ballina bar is notoriously hazardous as the entrance to the Richmond River.
Three people were confirmed deceased, while four made it to shore. The search was called off early Tuesday after everyone was accounted for. The deceased volunteers were aged 78 and 62. A third man, in his mid-50s, was found dead on the sand nearby, not wearing a life jacket. His identity has not yet been released.
Heroic Efforts and Community Reaction
Superintendent Joe McNulty stated that the volunteers set out on a fit-for-purpose rescue vessel, designed for local conditions. The crew faced very severe conditions, including a 2.5-metre swell from the east coast, which heightened wave height at the Ballina bar, making navigation difficult. The vessel capsized, trapping some crew members in the hull.
Margie Fitzgerald, a local resident, told 9News that the tragedy would deeply affect the close-knit community. Marine Rescue NSW Commissioner Todd Andrews said the deaths were a stark reminder of the risks volunteers face, noting that the two men made the ultimate sacrifice to help others.
NSW Premier Chris Minns paid tribute to the volunteers, praising their heroism, courage, and public-mindedness. He expressed that the people of NSW stand with them during this difficult time.
Investigation Ongoing
Police reported that the distressed yacht had hit a breakwall and broken apart before sinking. Divers may return to the scene on Thursday to recover evidence as investigations continue into how the yacht came so close to the breakwall.
