Royal Navy Frigate Fleet Shrinks as HMS Iron Duke Stripped

The Royal Navy's active frigate fleet has reportedly shrunk to just five vessels after HMS Iron Duke, a Type 23 warship, was stripped of its weapons and sensors, effectively taking it out of service without official decommissioning. This development was reported by specialist news website Navy Lookout.

HMS Iron Duke's Status

HMS Iron Duke has not been operational at sea since October 2025, following the government's cancellation of a planned conversion project for the frigate. The vessel, which was seen tracking a Russian submarine in October 2025, has now been rendered non-operational, reducing the Royal Navy's active frigate count significantly.

Replacement Plans

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) is progressing plans to replace its Type 23 frigates with eight new Type 26 and five Type 31 frigates, which are expected to join the fleet before 2030. The MoD stated that it is building a "hybrid Navy" and keeps planned out-of-service dates under continual review, with any decommissioning decisions to be announced in the usual way.

This reduction in active frigates raises concerns about the Royal Navy's capabilities, particularly in anti-submarine warfare and global presence. The MoD's emphasis on a hybrid Navy suggests a shift towards a mix of manned and unmanned vessels, but the immediate impact on operational readiness remains a topic of debate among defence analysts.
