Surfing icon Kelly Slater and his partner Kalani Miller have shared joyous news, announcing they are expecting their second child together. The couple, who welcomed their first son, Tao, in 2024, revealed in a heartfelt Instagram video that a baby girl is due to arrive in the spring of 2026.
A Heartwarming Beach Announcement
In the black-and-white video posted on social media, Slater, aged 54, is seen embracing Miller and their young son, Tao, as they laugh and smile during a walk along a sandy beach. Kalani Miller, co-founder of the popular swimwear brand Mikoh, proudly displayed her baby bump in the clip, which featured the couple sharing a tender kiss.
The video was captioned simply, 'Baby Girl arriving Spring 2026,' and was set to the fitting soundtrack of Stevie Wonder's 1976 hit Isn't She Lovely. Wonder originally wrote the song to celebrate the birth of his daughter, Aisha Morris, adding a poignant touch to the family's announcement.
Congratulations Pour In from the Surfing World
The comments section quickly flooded with messages of support and well-wishes. Australian surfing legend Mick Fanning wrote, 'Congrats to you all!!' while the World Surf League posted a goat emoji alongside 'Congrats!!' Surfing professional Shane Dorian added, 'Best Chapter,' highlighting the close-knit community's excitement.
This announcement mirrors a similar video the couple shared in March 2024 to reveal they were pregnant with their first child, Tao. In that earlier clip, Kelly and Kalani were filmed holding hands and walking towards the ocean, with the camera panning to Kalani's baby bump as they stood in the waves.
A Private Relationship with Public Glimpses
Despite keeping their relationship largely private, it is understood that Slater and Miller first met nearly two decades ago at a surf trade show in San Diego, California. Reflecting on that moment, Miller once said, 'I remember exactly seeing him for the first time and like time really did stop.'
In a past interview, when asked about expanding their family, Miller responded, 'Hopefully. I'm from a family of four. He's from a family of three. Now, when I see people travelling with four kids, I can't imagine my family or anyone doing that. It's crazy. I don't know, maybe two or three.'
Kalani often offers glimpses into their lives on Instagram, such as paying tribute to Slater in February with a heartfelt birthday message: 'Our favourite person! Happy birthday to my love @kellyslater.'
Slater's Family and Surfing Career
This new addition will be Slater's third child; he also has a daughter, Taylor, born in 1996 from his previous relationship with Tamara Mitchell. On the professional front, Slater appeared to unofficially retire from competitive surfing in 2024 after being cut from the Mid-Season Cut at Margaret River.
Although he has not competed on the World Surf League's Championship Tour since then, participating only in exhibition events, Slater made a surprising return to the sport by taking part in the Da Hui Backdoor Shootout earlier in January. This move suggests the surfing great may not be fully stepping away from the waves just yet.
As the couple prepares for their growing family, fans and the surfing community alike celebrate this new chapter in their lives, eagerly awaiting the arrival of their baby girl in spring 2026.
